The Meaning Behind Each Verse

Every phrase inscribed on a memorial carries meaning from the Quran and Islamic tradition. This page explains the standard front-panel phrases, the Quranic content within our back-panel artworks, and a selection of short optional verses. The front-panel phrases are engraved in your choice of Arabic calligraphy style.

Front Panel Phrases

Bismillāhi r-raḥmāni r-raḥīm

"In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful"

Bismillah opens the Quran and accompanies almost every action in Islamic life. On a memorial it marks the stone as belonging to Allah's mercy and care. It is the most commonly chosen front panel phrase.

Lā ilāha illallāhu Muḥammadur Rasūlullāh

"There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah; Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah."

The Shahada — the central declaration of Islamic faith. Placing it on a memorial affirms the person's belief and their submission to the one God. It is the phrase that connects a life's beginning, middle, and end in Islamic tradition.

Innā lillāhi wa innā ilayhi rājiʿūn

"Indeed, we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we shall return"

From Surah Al-Baqarah (2:156), this verse is recited at times of loss. It affirms that every soul belongs to Allah and returns to Him. On a memorial, it speaks directly to the nature of death as a return, not an ending.

Optional Short Verses

A selection of concise, elegant Quranic verses carrying a consistent theme of peace, vast mercy, and loving forgiveness — well suited for Islamic memorials. These can be discussed with our team as custom back-panel inscriptions.

Emphasises Allah's forgiveness and affectionate love. Short, gentle, and gives a sense of hope and closeness to Allah's mercy.

Surah Al-Hijr (15:46)

Surah Al-Fajr (89:27)

Yā ayyatuhā an-nafsu al-muṭmaʾinnah.

"O reassured soul — O soul at peace!"

One of the most beautiful verses for graves. It speaks lovingly to the soul, offering pure peace and contentment — gentle and deeply hopeful.

Back Panel Artworks

Each back panel is a complete calligraphic composition. Below is the Quranic content contained within two of our most requested designs.

Kufik

A bold geometric calligraphy style rooted in the earliest Quranic manuscripts. The Kufik back panel weaves together three Quranic verses that emphasise divine mercy and obedience to the Prophet ﷺ.

Surah Az-Zumar (39:53)

Qul yā ʿibādī alladhīna asrafū ʿalā anfusihim lā taqnaṭū min raḥmati Allāhi — inna Allāha yaghfiru adh-dhunūba jamīʿan, innahu huwa al-Ghafūru ar-Raḥīm.

"Say, "O My servants who have transgressed against themselves by sinning, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.""

Surah An-Nisa (4:80)

Man yuṭiʿi ar-rasūla faqad aṭāʿa Allāha, wa man tawallā famā arsalnāka ʿalayhim ḥafīẓā.

"Whoever obeys the Messenger has obeyed Allah; but whoever turns away — We have not sent you, O Muhammad, over them as a guardian."

Surah Al-Hashr (59:7)

Wa mā ātākumu ar-rasūlu fakhudhūhu wa mā nahākum ʿanhu fantahū. Wattaqū Allāha — inna Allāha shadīdu al-ʿiqāb.

"And whatever the Messenger has given you — take it; and what he has forbidden you — refrain from it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is severe in penalty."

Garden of Bliss

An intricate arabesque composition evoking the gardens of paradise. The panel brings together three verses that speak of accountability, divine rest, and the direction of prayer.

Surah Al-Isra (17:13)

Wa kulla insānin alzamnāhu ṭāʾirahu fī ʿunuqihi.

"Then for him is rest and bounty and a garden of pleasure."

Surah Al-Baqarah (2:144)

Qad narā taqalluba wajhika fī as-samāʾi — falanuwalliyannaka qiblatan tarḍāhā. Fawalli wajhaka shaṭra al-masjidi al-ḥarām.

"We have certainly seen the turning of your face toward the heaven, O Muhammad, and We will surely turn you to a qiblah with which you will be pleased. So turn your face toward al-Masjid al-Haram."

Choosing what to inscribe

The three front-panel phrases appear together in the configurator — Bismillah at the top, the Shahada in the middle, and Inna Lillahi at the bottom. The calligraphy style changes how they look, not what they say.

Back panel artworks and any short optional verses should be confirmed with our team before production begins.

Verify wording before production

All Arabic text, English names, dates, and transliterations should be reviewed carefully. Production should only begin once the family has confirmed the final wording.
